METAMORPHOSIS ART AUCTION: An Interview with Von Doyle on Creativity, Web3, and Digital Evolution

Von Doyle is a multidisciplinary artist creating AI-assisted visual art since 2020. He likes to play with many tools, but one of his favorite things is experimenting with neural networks, deep learning, and deep dream codes in Python/PyTorch.

He uses these algorithms to enhance the patterns in an image, and this process creates the dream-like, psychedelic appearance of his pieces by over-processing the image to a point of madness.

Depending on the codes he uses, different patterns are created. If you push the boundaries while experimenting with them, it can produce something quite disturbing, but he is fascinated by how scary and ugly computer dreams can be.

Interview for the ACCOMPART’S

Do you remember the first time you encountered art? What was your earliest experience with creating, and how did it shape your artistic journey?

A/ I grew up with a mother who was a theater director, so I was always connected to art. But in terms of discovering visual art, I have some early memories from when I was about 8 years old, visiting the Picasso Museum in Paris. I had a revelation of what could be achieved by something that was beautiful yet somewhat troubling.

Your work is deeply connected to AI. How it all started and what do you see in AI art that other techniques may not offer?

A/ I think AI is becoming a big part of everyone’s life and a significant part of the art world. But, just like with other technologies before, there is an adaptation period. I was an early adopter of AI as an art form, but now almost everyone is using some form of AI, whether for inspiration, organization, or efficiency purposes. I'm a storyteller, and for me, AI is just another tool to tell stories, like a pen or a camera. Right now, it's AI, and in a few years, it will be something else. Art is ever-evolving, and that’s what keeps me excited.

The Philosophy Behind METAMORPHOSIS

Why did you choose The Metamorphosis by Kafka as the philosophical backbone of this auction? How does its theme of transformation relate to the evolution of digital art?

A/ Another thing that excites me about AI art is the element of surprise. It reminds me of Dadaism, where artists would cut paper and let the pieces fall randomly onto another sheet. They had some control, choosing colors and shapes, but the final composition was unpredictable. Similarly, when I work with AI, I might start with a classical painting or a prompt, but the AI takes me to surprising places every time. Every new piece is a metamorphosis from what I originally had in mind into something different, much like Gregor Samsa in Kafka’s The Metamorphosis, awakening to an unfamiliar body and a reality that feels both absurd and inevitable.

Modern art has always shocked with its transformations, whether shifting from classical painting to a urinal or now, into digital and AI-driven forms. The idea of art existing without a physical presence seems to shock even more than anything before, making this the ultimate form of artistic metamorphosis

What unites the artists in this auction you are curating, and what statements do their works make about the evolving landscape of art in Web3?

A/ This curation brings together all forms of art, from classical painting and 3D sculpture to poetry, AI art, photography, and more. Web3 often gravitates toward specific genres, but I firmly believe that every form of art has a place in this space.

Many of your works explore unsettling and dreamlike distortions of reality. Do you have any personal creative rituals or unique techniques when working on your projects? And what inspires you during your creation process?

I like to capture ideas as they come to me, often in the most unexpected moments. More often than not, it’s my subconscious at work, processing thoughts in the background. When I focus on an idea, I tend to become obsessed with it, pursuing it until I either bring it to life or let it go if it doesn’t work.

Some of my ideas even come from dreams when they’re particularly vivid or intriguing.

As you probably know, I'm also highly inspired by the old masters. I think studying art history gives us a certain insight into the future.

As both an artist and curator, how do you envision the future of AI art?

A/ To be perfectly honest, I’m not sure anymore. I once thought it would be exciting to create photorealistic images and videos, but now that everything looks so clean, it's starting to feel a bit boring. I prefer when the AI’s distortions and nightmarish, random results come through, rather than something that resembles what you'd get with a traditional camera. I’m uncertain where AI art is headed, but as I’ve said, it’s just a tool, and if used correctly, it can still be incredibly fascinating and innovative.
