Concept/Philosophy:

Always Believing In Ghosts is an exploration of gothic beauty, ephemeral visuals and introspective surrealism. The exhibition invites artists to depict ghosts as manifestations of belief, memory or unresolved stories. Each work represents a spectral presence that lingers between past and present, reality and imagination. 

In this context, ghosts are not merely supernatural. They are echoes of emotion, fragmented self narratives and traces of what once was or might have been. 

Exploring the tension between permanence and impermanence, using ghosts as a lens to question what endures, artists are encouraged to delve into what haunts them. Crafting works that are not meant to evoke melancholy, but rather feelings of letting go of the past and allowing their “ghosts” to move on.

The observer’s role in the exhibition becomes central. With visuals that feel transient and dreamlike, carrying unexpected juxtapositions, each artwork asks the viewer to confront their own phantoms and reflect on the universal human trait to seek meaning in the things that remain out of reach. 

Be they personal or cultural, each encounter in Always Believing In Ghosts is a meditation on the persistent belief in the unseen, the stories we all carry and the specters that shape our lives.

Gallery Concept: 

Upon entering the gallery, viewers are treated to a neo-gothic inspired space. Lit candelabras line the walls between each piece and a sweeping, beautiful chandelier glistens over a long, dark rug. With white stone benches facing the art works on both sides. As you’re taken on an ephemeral journey, the works transition from dark to light. Conveying a narrative arc of transformation and regeneration for all those browsing the collection. 

Artists Briefing: 

Ghosts may be literal or metaphorical, embodied in landscapes, figures, atmosphere, or abstract forms. Artists are challenged to explore subthemes such as societal beliefs, regret, cultural hauntings, nostalgia, duality, acceptance and redemption. Artists should provide a short statement describing their personal “ghost”, connecting their piece to the theme. 

Curator statement: 

As a child growing up in Houston, I often wandered through old neighborhoods, where time seems to linger. Crumbling places that would whisper stories of lives long gone. You can feel the history and energy of all those who came before you. 

Those moments shaped my idea for Always Believing In Ghosts, my first curated exhibition. One that I hope conveys how the past tends to stay with us.

Ghosts, often seen as supernatural, have always been, in my mind, the regrets that we carry and memories that won't fade. But holding onto old pains only prevents us from focusing our energy on all the good we have in front of us.

• Inspiration for the vibe/atmosphere for the show also came in the form of my love for gothic/noir films. Such as Rebecca (1940), Vertigo (1958), Suspiria (1977), Edward Scissorhands (1990) and Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992).
