Francoise Gamma / @FrancoiseGamma is a digitally embodied entity that uses the Internet to draw animated GIFS (for Netscape 3.04). Its work has appeared on Kanye West's blog, in solo exhibitions, and all over the World Wide Web. Computers Club member.
Interview for the ACCOMPART’S
Francoise, your work is renowned for its meticulous construction of bodies using single-pixel lines. How was this unique style born? What inspired you to explore this form of digital artistry?
A/ The main idea was to unite and connect two apparently different worlds, traditional drawing with the digital environment. With the knowledge of both fields, I began to experiment until I reached a solid result. Apart from studying Fine Arts, I have been fortunate to have an education and a family tradition that has cultivated my sensitivity for creativity. It is a process that is reflected in my work, where the result is presented as this immense learning process, more than a finished work..
You've been creating GIFs for nearly two decades, starting from a traditional fine arts background. What would you consider to be the key turning points in your artistic development that led you to where you are today?
A/ In Fine Arts I dedicated many hours studying anatomical and anthropomorphic drawing, but also geometric drawing. By nature, fusion and agility, the idea of creating a personal project arose.
Also, as key points in my work, I want to mention the impact of the discovery of theoretical-practices especially in contemporary painting, such as, for example, how to represent and make visible the invisible, or create the unspeakable. My works in GIF format, static or animated, are an interconnection of all this amalgamation of ingredients, and the effort to make a whole more than the sum of its parts

With such a diverse body of work, from solo exhibitions to features on Kanye West’s blog, which of your projects do you hold closest to your heart, and why? What makes these pieces stand out to you personally?
A/ Over time, certainly, my work has diversified, but personally I have a great affection for my project called Videogramo, which reflects my entire creative journey. Referring to another interview and to generally describe this work I can define it with these words, where surreal worlds collide and explode in an urge to become visible. People, whose body absorbed hallucinations of a last psychedelic trip, stare at you with empty eyes. They make love, play games and participate in some strange, indescribable, yet attractive rituals…On the other hand, I also want to highlight my animations published on the Computers Club blog. It embodies my digital identity exploration and enduring fascination with the human form. In this work I navigate the intricate dance between dichotomies, the flat versus the three-dimensional, smooth transitions disrupted by glitches, realism morphed by distortion.
Your work blends various elements, from internet folklore to experimental cinema. Who or what influences your art the most?
A/ Also in Fine Arts, I specialized in studying history and theory of experimental cinema. On a theoretical level, I am greatly influenced by the writings of Harun Farocki and Catherin Russell. The reason is because experimental films have been considered autonomous forms on the margin of mainstream cinema. On a practical level I could mention an infinite number of authors in this field who have influenced me, for example Kenneth Anger, Maya Deren, Stan Brakhage, Chantal Akerman, to mention a few...
As a co-curator for the "Horror Vacui" auction, what personal meaning do you put into your work titled "Expression of horror. 2024" for the ACCOMPART'S
Auction?
A/ It is a purely accidental description, my origin comes from not titling my works and breaking the dogma of the ownership of the author's work, including breaking the dogma of art. This is the reason for including an unpronounceable title, a character set similar to an error. The same thing happens with the description, but connected to the title and theme of the exhibition.
Your artistic philosophy emphasizes experimentation and the use of obsolete technologies. How do you see your work developing in the future?
A/ On a poetic level, it can be said that the future does not exist, there is only the present that escapes us like water in our hands. In this flow through time I see my work under this paradoxical influence of going against the current, but always connected to my origin. That is, sensitivity to drawing, using my traditional technique of the GIF format and the exploration of obscure and abandoned programs and softwares.
