singlezer0 is a self-portrait artist who delves into the human condition using a blend of visual effects, animation, and artificial intelligence. Your earliest memory of creating digital art?
A/ It was probably a banner saying happy birthday, in Printshop to be printed on a dot matrix printer.
How has your experience in the online world influenced your real-life interactions and perspectives?
A/ I’ve always been on the computer. As soon as the internet became a thing, it was only natural that I was quick to adopt, and started making online friends in the 90s. That grew into forum and meme creation. Not to mention the online gaming aspect and the lifelong friends I made there. All of this has been integral in my personal development, so it affects every aspect of my real-life.
You engage deeply with themes of identity and the human condition through your art. What do you find to be the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects of your work?
A/ It's hard to look at my face for a long period of time and a lot of my work is just that. I’ve learned to disconnect from the fact it’s me… I also tend to be doing something to alter or disassemble my appearance, which makes it easier.
The most rewarding aspect is usually the response from a viewer. Being contacted directly to be told how much something I’ve made has connected with someone is the best feeling.
Dumpsterdiver #31How did AI influence your creative process? Are there any new technologies or directions you are eager to explore?
A/ Experimenting with AI in 2021 opened a lot of doors for me creatively. Learning to tame early methods of text to image creation helped carve out a bit of my own space in the scene. As a visual effects artist it’s been exciting to have new ways of creating assets, as well as toying with ideas that may not have been possible before.
Out of all the pieces you've created, which one do you hold closest to your heart and why? What makes this piece stand out to you personally?
A/ ‘You’re So Emotional’ was my ATH sale on ETH. Not only did it help me clear some debt, it probably stands as one of my first technical leaps in AI animation.
Your piece "Full of Great Ideas" features an audio component by Pointlessartifacts. How do you integrate contributions from other artists into your vision?
A/ I have a lot of talented friends who have their own specialties that we love to share with each other. Brian (pointlessartifacts) and I have worked together professionally for quite a long time, so when I had finished with an early version of the animation, sending it for him to watch is almost second nature. He immediately offered to make an audio pass, so we discussed the necessary details, and I let him work magic. When I work with any other artist, communication is the most important thing.
Could you share some insights into your creative process for the collaboration featuring Prince Adam singing '4 Non Blondes'? What inspired this unique project?
A/ “Fabumous Secret Powers” was borne out of the desire for two guys to make something funny for a very small portion of the internet. We were obsessed with Fensler Films and the GI Joe PSAs and really wanted to experiment with something similar. A few VHS tapes purchased off EBay later, and it was started. Jay Allen did the music and some editing, while I handled the compositing, editing and key scenes. Prince Adam on the rainbow star background was one of the first mashups I made and it sort of started rolling from there.
In what directions would you like to develop in the future?
I want to do more with 3d scanning. Taking self portraiture and object capture in interesting was. Combining ai images with real life objects and blending it all up.
